Derbyshire Mini League Match 1
Records Broken by Blackwells Joe
Blackwell and District Young Striders' athlete Joe Walker threw down a marker at the first Derbyshire Track and Field Mini League match of the season by setting two new league records and equalling a third. He took point one of a second off the U13 boys 100m, equalled the 200m record (both of which had stood for four years) and added half a metre to the shot record, putting a massive 10.22m with the 3.25kg shot.Other stand out AAA Grade 1 performances came from Emma Schaanning (CDAC U15 girls 75m Hurdles) and Todd Webster (DAC) and Brandon Lewis (CDAC) both clearing 1.45m in the U13 boys high jump with Todd just claiming victory on count back.
Amber Valley & Erewash AC set the score in the team event by claiming the first overall win of the season.

National Sportshall Finals
Derbyshires young sportshall U13 and U15 teams travelled to the NEC to contest the Aviva National Sportshall Finals, the grand finale to the sportshall season. The standard, as ever, was extremely high and medals of any colour hard to come by, however, it was the U15 boys team who had the most to be proud of. The county's only gold medal came by way of Amber Valleys Jethro McGraw and Chesterfields Jordan Ofield who combined well to win the U15 boys 8 Lap Paarlauf. Pairing Jordans sprint speed with Jethros endurance proved a winning formula but the lads had to endure an agonising wait to find out if they had run a quicker time than those in the first heat. Jordans twin bother was not to be outdone either in the medal stakes when he took a silver in the 4 lap sprint. A further silver medal was won by Chesterfields Corey Wilson in the U13 girls 2 lap sprint just missing out on gold by the thickness of her candy-pink T-shirt. Completing the medal collection was Derby ACs Jordan Thompson who bounced his was to a bronze in the U15 boys speed bounce.Unlucky to miss out on medals were Jack Allen (AVEAC) and Charlotte Jones (DAC). Birthday boy Jack had the bronze medal in the U15 boys triple jump unluckily snatched from him with the last jump of the competition, and Charlotte jumped a big personal best in the U13 girls standing long jump only to be denied a bronze medal on countback. Also finishing 4th was Ellie O'Connor (CDAC) in the U15 girls 4 lap.
The U15 boys team finished in 6th place out of 12 teams, and the U15 girls and U13 girls both finished 11th out of 12 teams.
The full team included Abbie Queenan, Leanne Smith, Megan Bruce, Molly Mee, Georgina Trace, Tamsin McGraw, Cara Brown, Rebecca Conway, Emily Coope, Emma Johnson, Maisy Allen, Lydia Gilliver, Emma Hough, Jordan White, Maisie Knighton and Russell Mackey.

Green For Go As County Take Sportshall Crowns
Derbyshire's U13 and U15 sportshall athletics teams won three out of a possible four titles at the Aviva East Midlands Regional Sportshall Athletics Finals at Grantham on Saturday 31st March. Competing against county teams from Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire the U13 girls, U15 girls and U15 boys teams all won their group and will now progress to the Aviva National Finals at the NEC on 21st April where they will complete for national team and individual titles against the best young athletes in the British Isles. In addition Amber Valley & Erewash ACs Jack Allen performed out of his skin to take the U15 boys All-Rounder title to take his place in his own right at the National Finals. Falling just short of making it a Derbyshire clean sweep were the U13 boys who finished second to a strong Nottinghamshire team.
As well as the team titles, athletes compete for Regional medals in each individual event and the relays, and the Derbyshire team came away with a haul of medals.
The U13 girls team were perhaps the surprise success of the day. The team had to be changed considerably from the initial team selection made in the New Year due to unavailability and illness but all rose to the challenge. Chesterfields Corey Wilson demonstrated why she was one of the UKs top U13 sprinters last year on the track by winning the 2 Lap sprint and the standing triple jump, then combined with club mate Rebecca Conway to win the 8 lap Paalauf. AVEACs Tamsin McGraw and Emily Coope gave inspiring shows of pace judgement in the 6 Lap and 4 Lap respectively, timing their finishes to perfection in the longer distance races which belied their years. Furthermore in the jump events Emily also won the vertical high jump, club mate Maisie Knighton won the speed bounce and Derby ACs Charlotte Jones won the standing long jump.
What a difference a year makes. At last years event Jack Allen finished in equal 9th place in the All-Rounder U15 boys competition. A year on, a different athlete, he emerged as the All-Rounder winner, taking a total of four medals. He was an easy winner in the 2 Lap, an unexpected winner in the standing triple jump, bronze in the shot and then anchored home the 4 x 2 lap relay team in the final event of the day along with Joshua Hough, Russell Mackey and Dean Ofield. The Derbyshire sextet were totally dominant in the team event with five lads in the top 9, including Joshua Hough who took bronze in the All-Rounder catagory. Jethro McGraw had a fine series of thows to win the shot putt then combined with sprinter Jordan Ofield to make a winning combination of speed and endurance for the 8 lap Paarlauf gold.
There were medals a plenty for the six U15 girls. Chesterfields Ellie O'Connor, at her first Regional Final, took gold in the 4 Lap and equal second in the vertical high jump, Team mate Ella Barrett took home two silvers for the 4 lap and standing long jump, then combined effectively with AVEACs ever-present sportshall representative Molly Mee to win the 8 Lap Paarlauf. Georgina Trace (AVEAC) delivered her best shot putt of the indoor season to win her specialist event and there were bronzes for Leanne Smith in standing long jump and Abbie Queenan in 2 Lap. Rounding off a great team effort Ellie, Abbie, Georgina and Leanne combined well to win the 4 x 2 relay.
Although there were no individual event winners in the U13 boys section there were plenty of silvers and bronzes for the young lads. AVEACs Scott Ram and Lewis Walker gained silvers for standing long jump and vertical jump respectively and Derby ACs Todd Webster took silver in high jump and a bronze in 2 Lap. There were bronzes for Callum Kay in the shot putt, George Dave in standing long jump, James Brewster in standing triple jump, and a special mention for AVEACs William Collings and Chesterfields Brandon Lewis who both took bronzes in the speed bounce and vertical jump respectively despite still technically being U11s for sportshall and surely amongst the youngest athletes on the day.
Congratulations to all Derbyshire athletes who took part and thank you to Team Managers Lisa Knighton, Julie Feeney, Peter Wilson and Nigel Smith, and to all those Derbyshire officials and parents who helped run the competitions.
Detailed results can be found on www.sportshall.org

The counties young sportshall athletes tasted success for another consecutive year when winning both the boys and the girls sections at the East Midlands 'Fun in Athletics' U11 Regional Final at Grantham on 22nd January. The team, made up exclusively from athletes from Amber Valley & Erewash AC and Chesterfield & District AC, was selected from performances at this seasons Derbyshire Mini League sportshall matches.
They were pushed all the way by the Nottinghamshire team but it was the strength on the relays that really made all the difference when it came down to the overall results.
The girls team won 6 out of a possible 8 relays, and the boys 5 out of a possible 8.
In the field events certain disciplines had Derbyshire athletes scoring highly.
The Chesterfield pairing of Lauren Kay and Alex Ediker bounced to top spot in the girls and boys speed bounce competitions respectively, with Amber Valleys William Collings gaining equal second.
The balance test was a high scoring event for the team with both Chesterfields Aly Stout and Erin Russell (tying for first place), and Amber Valleys Cole Pointon scoring the maximum possible.
Brandon Lewis (CDAC) launched the 1kg medicine ball out to a best throw of 8.25m for first place whilst clubmate Emma Botham did the same for the girls with Caitlin Emerson (AVEAC) a close second.
Derbyshires other individual field event win came from Amber Valleys Lily Naylor who won the target throw.
Well done to all athletes and thank you to team managers and officials.
