The counties young sportshall athletes tasted success for another consecutive year when winning both the boys and the girls sections at the East Midlands 'Fun in Athletics' U11 Regional Final at Grantham on 22nd January. The team, made up exclusively from athletes from Amber Valley & Erewash AC and Chesterfield & District AC, was selected from performances at this seasons Derbyshire Mini League sportshall matches.
They were pushed all the way by the Nottinghamshire team but it was the strength on the relays that really made all the difference when it came down to the overall results.
The girls team won 6 out of a possible 8 relays, and the boys 5 out of a possible 8.
In the field events certain disciplines had Derbyshire athletes scoring highly.
The Chesterfield pairing of Lauren Kay and Alex Ediker bounced to top spot in the girls and boys speed bounce competitions respectively, with Amber Valleys William Collings gaining equal second.
The balance test was a high scoring event for the team with both Chesterfields Aly Stout and Erin Russell (tying for first place), and Amber Valleys Cole Pointon scoring the maximum possible.
Brandon Lewis (CDAC) launched the 1kg medicine ball out to a best throw of 8.25m for first place whilst clubmate Emma Botham did the same for the girls with Caitlin Emerson (AVEAC) a close second.
Derbyshires other individual field event win came from Amber Valleys Lily Naylor who won the target throw.
Well done to all athletes and thank you to team managers and officials.

My name is Ian Varley and I am currently conducting a PhD at Nottingham Trent University in collaboration with University College London. I am writing to you regarding in some of my PhD research.
My research is investigating whether a predisposition to stress fracture injury exists in some elite athletes. I am aiming to collect over 600 samples in total making this study the largest investigation in to stress fracture occurrence in athletic populations to date. Samples have already been collection from variety of athletes including Great Britain training squads in a variety of sports.
The present study aims to assist with research into bone injury rehabilitation, prevention and early diagnosis.
I’m unsure if any of your members have suffered from stress fracture injuries. Would it be okay to potentially produce a small advert that could be placed in your newsletter asking for participants?
The athlete is required to:
• Complete a short questionnaire detailing their stress fracture status and brief athletic status
• Provide a salvia sample for DNA analysis.
The whole process of providing a saliva sample and questionnaire completion takes ~10 minutes and can be done by post.
If this project is of interest to you or you would like more information please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for your time.
Kind regards,
Ian Varley

Chesterfield & District Athletics Club has made a successful bid for £1,000.00 from the Cash4Clubs scheme, which is jointly funded by Betfair and SportsAid. This will enable the club to pay for four volunteers to attend Coaching Assistant courses, and three more volunteers to attend Coach courses.Chesterfield & District Athletics Club plays a pivotal role in Derbyshire and draws members from a wide radius. The club provideS good quality coaching and competition catering for all abilities. By this process, and over the years, the club has nurtured numerous County, Regional and National Champions.
With the aim to increase active membership to over 200, the club needs to increase its number of qualified coaches, particularly in areas like the throws, vertical jumps, middle-distance and cross-country running. With such a strong volunteer base the passion is there, it is just the cost of training that is stopping things at the moment.
Betfair and SportsAid recognise the importance of community sport, so Cash 4 Clubs has been set up to facilitate fundraising for community sports clubs throughout the country.
Frank Gorman, Club Secretary, said "Our Cash 4 Clubs grant has come just at the right time. With this £1,000 we're going to be able to send 4 volunteers on assistant courses and it will allow a further 3 individuals to attend athletics coaching courses. Once fully trained they will improve our coach/athlete ratio and allow us to take on more new members."

Officials Needed for Sportshall Finals
The 36-strong team of Derbyshires U13 and U15 athletes contest the National Sportshall Finals at the LG Arena, NEC Birmingham on 3rd April. By now all athletes should have been contacted with final arrangements for the day. The T-shirt colour this time round is lime green!Taking such a large team the county is required to field 8 officials and so far we have only 2. Officials are looked after particularly well at the National Finals and are treated to free lunch and refreshments, and a free T-shirt. The county are also offering free travel on the bus which has pickup points in Chesterfield, Alfreton and Little Eaton. Officials should ideally have some experience of sportshall athletics although we would also be interested to hear from non-qualified parents ( with maybe some experience in officiating, team managing or coaching at Mini League). If you would prefer to see the action from the arena floor rather than the stands please email Julie Feeney feeney@mailbox60.freeserve.co.uk

Derbyshire young athletes proved once again that they are a dominant force in sportshall athletics in the East Midlands after winning all four age groups at the Aviva East Midlands Regional U13 / U15 Sportshall Finals. Competing at Grantham on 20th February they beat teams from Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. For an historic third year in a row they swept the board winning the U13 girls, the U13 boys, the U15 girls and the U15 boys and are assured a place at the Aviva National Sportshall Finals at the NEC on 3rd April. The 36-strong team of 11 to 15 year olds were selected for the team from their performances at the Derbsyhire Athletics Associations Mini League matches that have been taking place throughout the winters months, and included athletes from Amber Valley & Erewash AC, Chesterfield and District AC, and Derby AC. Resplendant in sky blue T-shirts the teams strength showed as individual and team medals were presented, in fact there were hardly any track or field events throughout the afternoon where the Derbyshire team did not have at least one medallist. The U13 girls were convincing winners over Nottinghamshire in second place by 130 points. In the field four girls who have been outstanding in Mini League produced the same form to take gold medals. Megan Bruce (AVEAC) won speed bounce, Abbie Queenan (CDAC) won vertical jump, Georgina Trace (AVEAC) won shot putt and Ella Barrett (CDAC) won standing long jump. Megan Stone (CDAC) surprised herself by winning the high jump with a personal best. Corey Wilson (CDAC) won the 2 lap race and combined well with Megan Bruce to easily win the 8 lap paarlauf. Various combinations of the girls team proved successful as they came first in every relay event.
The U13 boys team had seen several changes to the team in the run-up to the match yet they too performed remarkably well given that over half of the team still have a further year or two in this age group. Jethro McGraw (AVEAC) easily won the gruelling 6 lap paarlauf, the event he also won at last years event, and took gold in the shot putt. A further gold came when he joined with Jordan Thompson (DAC) for the 8 lap paarlauf, the pair showed how this event should be run and the lads could be a good bet for a medal at the National Finals in this event. Jordan added another gold medal to his collection by winning the standing triple jump. Joshua Hough (CDAC) showed the opposition a clean pair of heels winning the 2 lap, whilst William Eddiker (CDAC) bounced his way to a gold medal in the speed bounce.
The U15 girls had the closest finish in the team competition just pipping Nottinghamshire by 20 points. The only individual gold medallist was Mae Emery (DAC) who took first equal in speed bounce but there were silvers and bronzes across most of the events keeping the girls in contention. Derbyshire has such strong pairings in the 8 lap paarlauf and the U15 girls duo of Emily Heappey and Molly Mee (both AVEAC) kept up the gold medal-winning ways. In the U15 age groups, as well as individual medals and team glory the athletes also work towards the 'all rounder' titles, a combination of scores of their three individual events. Whilst not having an athlete in the top 3, four Derbyshire girls finished in the top 10 out of 31 athletes. The AVEAC trio of Emily Heappey, Molly Mee and Imogen Cresswell packed well in 5th, 6th and 7th equal positions with Mae Emery in 9th equal.
The U15 boys can always be relied upon to entertain the crowds with their speed and strenth, not to mention size! By the time the lads get to this age group many have been doing sportshall for many years and are seasoned campaigners. Jay Raradza (DAC) has been a regular in Derbyshires teams for many years and excells at the short sprints, winning the 2 lap for the second year in a row. Another repeat winner was Dominic Hare (CDAC) who won the 4 lap, adding a standing long jump gold for good measure, whilst Will Stockton (CDAC) another veteran of last years successful team, won the shot putt. Jay and Dominic combined their sprint and endurance talents to win the 8 lap paarlauf, employing a more unusual 2 / 4 / 2 tactic to good effect. The final race of the day, the U15 boys 4 x 2 lap relay is always a show stopper and the Derbyshire quartet of Jack Allen (AVEAC), James Elliott (CDAC), Kane Jordan (DAC) and Stockton brought the house down in a race which went to a 'photo finish' with the Derbyshire team judged just ahead of the Notts quartet. In the all-rounder catagory Dominic Hare went one better than last year to finish with a silver medal, whilst all six lads finished in the top 10 (Raradza and Stockton 4th=, Jordan 6th, Allen and Elliott 9th=)
Thank you to Team Managers Paul Ashmore, Julie Feeney, Lisa Knighton, Nigel Smith, Peter Wilson and officials Trevor Jolly and Tony Trace. Athletes will be informed of details about the National Finals on 3rd April when arrangements are known. Full results can be found on www.sportshall.org

Derbyshire Athletics' young team of U11's took victory in both the girls and the boys sections at the Aviva 'Fun in Athletics' U11s Regional Sportshall Final at Grantham on 30th January. Pushed all the way by the Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire teams the Derbyshire youngsters held their own across the wide range of events designed to test speed, agility, strength, skill and coodination. The Derbyshire girls performed strongly in the relay events, winning five out of a possible eight events. In the field Charlotte Jones (Derby AC) excelled winning the standing triple jump and taking second in chest push. Amber Valleys' Tamsin McGraw and Maisie Knighton had one win a piece in standing long jump and speed bounce respectively, whilst Claudia Johnson (AVEAC) second in target throw, Abigail Turner (Chesterfield DAC), third in chest push, Ashleigh Keeble (Chesterfield DAC), third equal in speed bounce and Dayna Towns (2DASH), third equal in target throw kept the points rolling in.
The Derbyshire boys won five out of a possible eight relay events with three of those won by Derby's Todd Webster and Chesterfields Merlin Ferinho combining well to get the team a hat-trick of wins in the 1+1, 2+2 and 6 lap paarlauf. In the field there were wins for Amber Valley's Scott Ram (standing long jump) and Todd Webster (javelin). George Dave (AVEAC) took second in standing long jump and third in chest push, and George Taylor (Chesterfield DAC) finished second in chest push.
Derbyshire has always had a strong tradition in this event, being represented annually by an Amber Valley district team. For this season though the structure of teams has been brought into line nationally, with only county teams eligible to compete. For the first time the county's clubs U11s have been able to able to experience the excitement and atmosphere that our U13's and U15s have been used to for many years. Participation and good performance in the local Derbyshire Mini League was rewarded with selection for the county team and a very exciting and fun-filled day.
Behind every successful team, of course, are those people who give their time to help the team. Thank you to team managers Nigel Smith, Lisa Knighton, Peter Wilson and Paul Ashmore, team coordinator Julie Feeney, officials on the day Julie Brown, Jane Coope and Trev Jolly, and to all those who helped the team in practice sessions.
